Bug Jar
The Bug Jar, located in Rochester, NY, has been a mainstay in the local music scene since 1991, providing a platform for both local bands and major touring acts. The venue has a capacity of 200 and hosts live music and DJs seven days a week. It has a rich history, with a reputation for showcasing artists and bands before they make it big.
In the early 2000s, the Bug Jar hosted a free music festival outside Highland Park called Bug Jar Fest, featuring a wide variety of aspiring local and national artists. Notably, the White Stripes performed at the festival the day the New York Times published a significant article about the band, which helped them gain popularity. Other major acts that have performed at the Bug Jar include The Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
The Bug Jar has evolved over time, transitioning from hosting events such as trivia nights and DJ sets every night of the week to opening its doors only when there is a music event. This change has made attending events at the Bug Jar even more special. The venue still holds the occasional theme night, including a recurring Emo Night, where a live band comes in and plays classics from the mid-to-late 2000s.
The Bug Jar is more than just a music venue; it's a part of the local culture. It attracts a wide variety of people, from locals to passersby, and has been thoroughly involved in the music community since its inception. It's a place where music enthusiasts can discover new bands and artists can gain exposure and connect with their audience.
