The Grey Eagle
The Grey Eagle, located in Asheville's River Arts District, is a beloved all-ages live music venue with a rich history and a reputation for showcasing a diverse assortment of musical genres. The venue first opened its doors in 1994 in Black Mountain, North Carolina, under the ownership of Edd Konopka. It was later purchased by Tyler Richardson and Dan O’Brien in 1997, who continued to foster its growth as a hub for local, regional, and touring artists. After losing their lease, the venue was relocated to Asheville's River Arts District in 1999, where it has remained a staple of the local music scene.
Over the years, The Grey Eagle has hosted over 10,000 shows, featuring a mix of local talents and nationally touring artists. Some notable performers include the Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Richie Havens, Frank Black, Deen Ween, Lake Street Dive, Slick Rick, Nathaniel Ratcliff, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Budos Band, Darrell Scott, and many more. The venue has also been the site of breakthrough performances, such as a memorable show by Of Montreal, known for their colorful theatrics.
The Grey Eagle is more than just a music venue. It's a place where people can mingle and relax, with a large dance floor, a relaxing patio area, and one of the best sound systems in Asheville. It's also home to the Grey Eagle Taqueria, adding a culinary element to the music experience. The venue's commitment to spotlighting rising talent and offering a diverse assortment of musical genres has earned it recognition as one of the nation’s top venues by Garden and Gun magazine.
