PhilaMOCA
PhilaMOCA, short for the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art, is a unique multipurpose art space located in the historic Finney & Son building, a former showroom for mausoleums dating back to 1865. The venue has a rich history, having been purchased by local music producer Diplo in the mid-2000s and used as the headquarters for his record label, Mad Decent[1]. Notable artists like Christina Aguilera, Shakira, M.I.A., and Santigold have recorded there, and it has hosted concerts by Glass Candy, Skream, Boys Noize, Nicos Gun, and more.
PhilaMOCA is known for its alternative and DIY culture, hosting over 300 events a year, including film premieres, art exhibitions, and fashion shows. It has a capacity of 150 and is open to all ages. The venue has received both national and international acclaim for its unique approach to art, with notable annual events including Eraserhood Forever, a celebration of David Lynch and his relationship with Philadelphia, and the Cinedelphia Film Festival.
Artists who have performed at PhilaMOCA include Wolf Eyes, a noise band that headlined a show in 2015, and indie rock acts Yowler, Kississippi, and Thin Lips, who performed to raise funds for the venue. The venue also hosts the Philly Video Music Festival, a showcase of contemporary Philly music videos from local directors.
PhilaMOCA is more than just a music venue. It's a hub for the local arts community, offering a platform for artists to showcase their work and connect with a diverse audience. Despite facing zoning issues in the past, the venue has persevered and continues to be an important part of the Philadelphia arts scene.
